Nationals Notes: Herz, Alvarez, Henry, Ortiz (2026)

The Washington Nationals' pitching staff is in flux, with a mix of established veterans and promising prospects. The team's rotation has been relatively stable, with five starters - Cade Cavalli, Foster Griffin, Jake Irvin, Miles Mikolas, and Zack Littell - taking the mound every fifth day. However, the recent loss of Irvin to a shoulder strain has forced the team to make a change, and left-handed pitcher Andrew Alvarez has stepped up to fill the void. Alvarez, who has been on and off the active roster early in the season, has shown promise with a 27% strikeout rate over 20 1/3 big league innings. His ability to strike out batters, despite only sitting in the low-90s, makes him a valuable asset to the team. However, the Nationals' rotation is not without its weaknesses. With a 4.59 earned run average, they are in the bottom third of the MLB, largely due to a high home run rate. The team has been tinkering with their pitching staff, making changes to try and improve their performance. Despite these changes, the Nationals' position players have remained relatively unchanged, with the same 13-man hitting group carrying the team since May. The team's offensive production has been a concern, with Curtis Mead seizing the third base job and hitting .247/.356/.487 with nine home runs. However, the Nationals' pitching staff remains a work in progress, with the team looking to find the right combination of starters and relievers to lead them to success.
