Behind the Scenes: The Sound Room
The Stadthalle's sound room, led by Head of Sound Gerhard Jansa, was the hub of activity, handling mic audio, IEM audio, artist audio preparation, and audio distribution. Two independent mixing desks with operators ensured failsafe operation, and the sound room accommodated six Spectera Base Stations, with four active for audio and control data, one for scanning, and one as a true spare unit.
Simplifying Complexity with Spectera
Spectera's simplicity in cabling the arena was a game-changer, as Jonas Næsby explained. The use of fibre runs and standard IT media converters allowed for full performance from the remote antennas, avoiding the compromises of RF-over-fibre systems. This setup ensured perfect coverage when artists entered the stage from behind the video wall.
Mic Rotation and Artist Experience
The audio team provided mic rotation with six Spectera handhelds, in-ear rotation with six Spectera SEK bodypacks, and an 'all-in' rotation with six Spectera bodypacks. The bidirectional Spectera bodypack with a cardioid Headmic 4 was a hit with artists, offering fantastically clear, spatial in-ear sound. The soon-to-be-released Neumann KK 105 A capsules were also a favorite, reducing pick-up from adjacent sound sources.
Solving Fading and Phasing Issues
Sennheiser's Spectera technology, developed to address fading challenges at the ESC, has come full circle. The wideband technology, multiplexing microphones, and time slots eliminated fading notches and cancellations. The system's ability to sync internal clocks of digital microphones resolved phasing issues, ensuring crystal-clear audio and flawless wireless performance.
